Celebrate Juneteenth with the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir

Everyone is welcome at this joyful Juneteenth celebration! At 7pm, come hear the rousing and spirited Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir directed by Dr. Dexter Criss.

There’s also a rare chance to sing along! Dr. Criss will lead a GOSPEL WORKSHOP – all singing abilities welcome.  From 5:30 – 6:30, he will rehearse one song with community members, who will have the opportunity to perform the song in the concert alongside the choir.

The celebration starts at 4:30pm for a BBQ, Mocktails, lawn games and book raffles for all ages.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that the enslaved African Americans of Galveston, TX, were freed - nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.  The next year, the people of Galveston commemorated that day as Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom. Since then, it’s been observed in communities and states as a holiday, but officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

Adirondack Writer and Performer  Sandra Weber will introduce the choir and give a short history of Juneteenth.

The event is free with a suggested donation of $8 for dinner.   BYO Picnic blankets or folding chairs.
